10.6.3 does not solve the gray-borders issue.

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 2:40 pm

Unfortunately, updating to 10.6.3 did not correct the problem with V4 ICC profiles for me…. Version 4 ICC profiles still print with a gray border around the image. My solution, as with others, has been to remake my profiles as Version 2.

Wish there was better news…

Edit April 1,2010:

Today (4 months later) Apple replied to my bug filing, and admitted it’s a bug in their code. The bug tracking number is Bug ID# 7515184.

Edit May 1, 2010:

And Photoshop CS5 doesn’t fix it either, but now at least the preview in the print dialog shows it.

Edit May 3, 2010:

And Apple’s new Epson Printer drives released today don’t fix it either. At this point, it’s been a known bug for almost 5 months, and no one seems to care.

  1. Tracy,

I just bought a ColorMunki. Thought it was getting the newest latest greatest. I see advertised in NAPP magazine and video promotions on its greatness. So I buy it because my new 27 inch iMac monitor needs calibration. I also wanted to create profiles so my Epson R2400 prints would match my screen.
I guess there is a lesson to be learned here. Do research before purchasing. I calibrated the monitor with the Colormunki and then went to calibrate the printer. I was excited that I was finally going to get my prints to match my monitor. I created a profile for Epson premium luster paper. I make a print and it has this cyan border and prints are very dark compared to the monitor. After reading your blog, I think I should return it immediatley. I have a tnedency to sit on stuff thinking and up date will fix it. I also have four Pocket wizards TT1 and TT5 units that don’t do as they claim. I’m tired of manufactures selling stuff that doesn’t work.

Or is it me? I would appreciate hearing from you. It sounds like your very knowledgeable. Color management isn’t something I know much about. But I know a cyan borders and dark prints isn’t what I want to spend over 300.00 for in a system. I included my email address. Thank you in advance.

  2. It’s decidedly NOT the ColorMunki. As I noted, it’s a bug in Apple’s ColorSync. I have and continue to use my ColorMunki. To get it to work properly, you need to go to the ColorMunki program’s preferences and choose to have it create a version 2 profile. The default is version 4. The print results from properly using the ColorMunki are well worth it.

If you are unfamiliar with profiles, read this page I wrote a number of years ago: http://www.tracyvalleau.com/colorprofiles.html

The iMacs have -very- bright screens, so you’ll have to work on getting your turned down. While I have a Cinema Display, I still find it helpful to sometimes use “DarkAdapted” to dim the screen even further. And, of course, you need to have profiled both your monitor and your printer.

Yes: I am saying that the 2400, properly calibrated, will turn out great photos, which will match your screen… once you get your screen brightness turned down enough, and are using the profiles themselves properly when printing from Photoshop.

    Don’t throw anything away. It’s just a matter of adjustment… yes: “it’s you.” :-)

  3. Tracy,

Thank you very much for taking the time to help me out. I will start working toward making corrections in the way I’m doing it now.

  4. Tracy,
So…Even w/ making V2 icc profiles, I’m still getting a cyan cast around my image. If I canvas my image to match my paper size, there is no cast. In addition, 10.6.4 does not resolve the issue.
There must be something in the print set up the is doing something to the paper white around the image. The image look s right on.
btw, I’m using CS5, SL10.6.4 and an Epson 3800. Any ideas???

    Thanks,
    Aaron

  5. Cyan? I’ve not seen that, although it sure sounds symptomatic of this issue talked about here. If you still have CS4, check to see if it appears when printed from there. If so, it’s something in your setup, else I’m afraid my only idea is to submit this as a bug report to Apple. I have the same setup as you do, and don’t see the problem. If you’re using ethernet to access the printer, you might try switching to USB. Let me know if you find the solution. Sorry I couldn’t be more help.
